How to Drive Engagement on Social Media

February 4, 2015

Are you being heard on Twitter? Make sure to follow these tips to make your followers engage with the content you tweet!

Keep Them Clicking

Twitter recently stated that adding URLs to your tweet increases your retweets significantly. Salesforce reported that 92% of all Twitter interaction (eg. Favourites, retweets etc) comes from followers clicking on links. The social media app Buffer even suggests that, having a link on your tweet increase retweets by 86%!  Make sure that the content you share is relevant, easy to read and something that your followers are interested in knowing.

Show Off Your Personality

One of the great things about Twitter is that it lets you personalize, not only your tweets, but your bio well. Make sure that your Twitter bio has a good profile and cover picture and strong description with keywords that identify what you are interested in and what a follower can expect from your tweets.

A Picture Is Worth 1000 Words (or 23 characters)

A study conducted by Buffer found that tweets that had images had 89% more favourites than tweets that did not and received 19% more clicks. Also, a recent Twitter study suggests that adding an image can increase retweets by 35% and adding a video increase retweets by 28%. Remember that images do not necessarily have to be actual photographs, but they could also be graphs, posters, quotes etc.

Keep It Short

Follow the KISS philosophy: keep it short and simple. Tweets with 110 characters or less get 17% more engagement than longer ones. Remember that Twitter limits your word count for a reason, tweets with 140 characters or more forces your followers to edit your tweet before retweeting it.

Respond To It All

It is important for your followers to know that you are listening to their opinions. Show this by responding to any complaint, compliment or interesting tweets they send your way. It is also important to identify your most influential followers, those who share your content and their followers engage, and start a conversation with them. Show your followers that they matter!

Don’t Forget About Evenings & Weekends

Only 19% of companies tweet on weekends, make sure you are one of them! Social media guru Dan Zarrella studied engagement during the week versus engagement during the weekends and found that click through rate increased on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just like on weekdays, engagement on weekends flourish during “busy hours” (8:00 am-7:00 pm).
