A Day in the Life of a Social Media Manager Cats

It’s no surprise that our favorite feline friends (or enemies, if you’re a dog person) create amazing engagement and traction on social media. And we’re not just talking about one social platform - we’re talking about ALL of them! No matter which platform you’re scrolling through, you’re bound to come across a hilarious cat video, and you know won’t be able to resist.

As it turns out, the life of a cat (whether it’s documented or not) aligns incredibly well to that of a social media manager.

Let us take you on a journey of the life of a social media manager, as told by cats:

6:30 AM - Wake up & do your daily stretches

Cats understand that a routine is imperative if you want to successful. For cats and social media managers alike, it’s important that we get up at the same time every morning and get moving on your day. There’s so much to do in a day that we can’t afford to sleep in even for an hour! And don’t forget to exercise first thing in the AM!... because we all know that if you don’t do it now, you’ll never get around to it later!

7:00 AM - Feasting

Cats love their food, and they want you to know it too! Those loud and persistent scratches on your bedroom door at exactly 7:00 AM. Every. Single. Morning. Without their morning feast, cats wouldn’t be able to actively start the day.

Similarly, social media managers also need their “food”, but for us, first thing in the morning, we're hungry for content! 7 AM, on the dot, we’re settled in and ready to feast our eyes on new content and news articles for our clients.

7:30 AM - Laze around the house

Now, to be clear, social media managers work very hard! But most of us get to work from the comfort of our homes which means we can stretch across the couch, laptops on our laps, cozy into the desk chair with a blanket on a rainy day, or hey if we're feeling a little under the weather, we can even pull that laptop into bed with us for ultra comfort. Just like how cats love to cuddle up all over the house, so do we!

9:00 AM - Actively monitor the area for hazards

For cats, these hazards include the following: dogs, spray bottles, baths, rain, any water in general, medicine, loud noises, etc. A large part of their day consists of avoiding these dangers to ensure a stress-free day.

Believe it or not, social media managers are doing the same thing! Although they don’t spend their day avoiding water. (Or at least we hope not - bathing is important, people!) Instead, we’re constantly monitoring social media accounts for ‘hazards’ - bad publicity, rude comments, and anything that causes a disruption in our day.

10:00 AM - Hooman lures you in to play

When a hooman waves a shoelace a cat's face, they can’t say no! Cats are engaging when they’re prompted, and so are social media managers. As part of our day, it is our responsibility to ‘play’ or engage with our hoomans - aka our client’s audience. When they’re retweeting and commenting on our content, we’re the one’s who respond with engaging comments and questions in return.

12:30 PM - Take a nap

Don’t question it - sometimes everyone needs a midday nap. Just never longer than an hour. If something happens on a client's account, we need to catch it or capitalize on it quickly!

2:00 PM - Hooman takes video of you climbing into a tiny box

There’s a reason why you see at least one cat video on your news feed per day. Cats are photogenic and they know it! Photos and videos are deemed necessary for marketing, including social media. As marketers, we spend a good chunk of our time posting daily #MyOfficeToday photos and various activities that consume our personal lives. Because not only do we have to build clients’ brands, but our own as well. We are meowlennials after all!

2:30 PM - Get sassy

We all know that cats are the sassiest animals out there, and that makes them kind of hilarious and incredibly entertaining. We take notes from these felines when writing copy and scheduling posts for the later - trying to come up with catchy phrases and images that will not only tell a story, but surprise people! That's the key to getting engagement on social media - BE ENGAGING!

4:30 PM - Observing the home

To finish off the day, cats enjoy spending some time perching on a windowsill and observing their home. They enjoy watching hoomans make fools of themselves, or look at the birds fight for food outside. For social media managers, this coincides with reviewing different metrics through analytics. We’re responsible for observing our “home” (*cough cough* the land of social media), and making notes on how to perform better tomorrow.

So you see? Our furry friends live very similar lives to social media marCATers (...get it?).

Happy National Black Cat Day from our resident furry friend, Oakland!
